Introducing  the alternative V-Day

In the last blog post we mentioned Eve Esler's The Vagina Monologues the play grew into a campaign in 1998; this year it celebrates 20 years strong.

V-Day is a global movement to "end violence against women and girls": local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances" of The Vagina Monologues and other works by Eve. These groups stage local performances and 90% of profits go towards important related projects.

V-Season has begun already this year and you can find out if a local fundraising production is taking place near you

“Stop fixing your bodies and start fixing the world!” - Eve Esler

One Billion Rising was launched by Eve Esler in 2012 and is "the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history."

"The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS."

This year's campaign focuses on "Solidarity" and events have already begun around the globe.

Find an event taking place near youDemonstrations and local events are taking place from February until March 8, so if there isn't an event near you and you're feeling inspired there's still time to create one in your community.

We'll leave you with Eve's words:

“An activist is someone who cannot help but fight for something. That person is not usually motivated by a need for power or money or fame, but in fact is driven slightly mad by some injustice, some cruelty, some unfairness, so much so that he or she is compelled by some internal moral engine to act to make it better.”

So now you have just a few more options for this year’s February 14! Happy V-Day!
