Welcome to the first edition of The Moon Room. A monthly reading of each full and new moon by Jyotish astrologer, Darinka Maja. To kick off our first blog of the series, we’ve invited our in-house astrologer Darinka to introduce herself and elaborate on the realm of Jyotish.

A note from Darinka:

Hey Star Travellers,

It is a great pleasure to share the language of the cosmos with you all!

My journey with Astrology started in my teens. I wanted to learn about my inner self, beyond psychology. I wanted to know why I did the things I did and how I could change. Early life experiences instilled the sense of a divine order to things. I was drawn to anything and everything esoteric, cosmic and ancient.

My relationship to the Indian subcontinent started young and I have visited many times since. As I grew older, I began exploring yoga and Ayurveda, and the Indian system of astrology known as Jyotish. I decided I needed a teacher to illuminate this vast body of knowledge, and since 2015 I have completed 6 courses with Komilla Sutton, including her 3 year foundational program. I have delivered presentations several times at Komilla’s Fresh Talents conference, internationally and online.

Jyotish translates to “science or study of light” - indeed, this ancient science, gifted to us from the ancient rishis and rishikas, illumines our path in life - the timing of the karmas we are here to experience, our dharma/duty we are here to follow and the likely trajectory life will unfold. Many situations can be remedied, remedies and propitiation form a major part of Jyotish and Vedic culture.

Understanding Jyotish extends far beyond a 2 dimensional interpretation of the cosmos. It is a lifelong interest, involving years of study and observation, but most importantly, cultivating a relationship with the celestial bodies themselves, just as we do with our own body and that of Mother Earth - we are part of an entire planetary family.

This introduction would not be complete without mentioning that Jyotish and the more commonly known western system are about 24° apart - meaning signs are not always the same. Jyotish follows the sidereal zodiac, which is based on the fixed stars. Western is a seasonal system. The difference occurs due to the earth’s axial wobble, or precessional cycle.

If you would like to find out more about why the difference between the western and vedic systems exist and to find out more about Jyotish, please head to my website and download my free E-Book which explains this.

I look forward to going on this journey with you. Darinka x
